5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, portable and visually stunning - this is the best MacBook Pro yet., 3 July 2012

This review is from: Apple 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (Intel Quad Core i7 2.3GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB Flash Memory, HD Graphics 4000, 1GB GeForce GT 650M, OS X Lion) (Personal Computers)
The Macbook Pro with Retina Display is the latest in the MacBook pro range, and is without doubt the best looking and performing laptops on the market today. Regarding the tech itself, the Intel Quad Core i7 is the latest offering by Intel and the range of Sandy Bridge processors have been replaced by the new Ivy Bridge chips and this version ships with 8GB of RAM. The flash memory hard drive is only 256GB on this model and this seems like a bit of a drop compared to the size of traditional hard drives which can easily manage up 500GB-1TB in laptops these days. However, Apple have made speed and power a hallmark of this upgrade, and what you lose in hard drive space you do make up for in performance. If you need extra hard drive space, you can upgrade to over 700GB of flash storage (but this has to be done at the time of purchase and through Apple directly). Alternatively, the non-retina MacBook Pros have large storage space at a less costly price.

Of course the talking point has to be regarding the display itself. It has 5.1 million pixels, which is about 3 million more than an HDTV. To say that the screen is stunning is an understatement. It really has to be seen to be believed. To date, the Apple apps that ship with the laptop are all rendered perfectly for the resolution, but at the time of writing, the majority of third party apps are not correctly configured for the display, making them look a little fuzzy. Some of questioned this as being a clever ploy to increase the number of users of Safari, Apple's internet browser (which makes web pages look stunning). Google Chrome and Firefox both look slightly more fuzzy, although I doubt it will take long for them to update their browsers. Until then, Safari is the best bet for browsing the web.

The three things that caught my attention things are the loss of the DVD drive, that of an ethernet port (although you can buy a separate adapter should you require this) and the fact that it is almost impossible to upgrade. I have to confess none of these things bothered me greatly - I rarely use the CD/DVD drive and usually connect wirelessly to networks so these things were not major sticking points for me. The fact that the hard drive and RAM cannot be easily upgraded after the purchase means that whatever spec you go for, that will likely be it for the life of the machine. If you think you will need more hard drive space or RAM, now is the time to decide. This is quite a cunning plan by Apple, because it forces you to pay more at the start and reduces the amount third parties can make in selling peripheral parts. Again, this didn't bother me at all, but for those of you who like to upgrade your machines, this will be challenging to do.

The battery life lasts between 7-9 hours (depending on wifi usage) and given the power of the machine, this is a pretty amazing battery life. Weighing at just over 2 kilos, this is the epitome of power and portability. The design is as slick as you would expect - the main body of the machine is exceptionally thin, and this is surely due to the loss of the DVD drive. There are two thunderbolt slots and two USB 3 slots for exceptionally fast transfer speeds (although the speed you get is dependent on the capabilities of the USB storage device itself). The laptop itself is very quiet and makes almost no noise at all. Like the MacBook Pro, it does have a tendency to get quite hot when using a lot of processing power, but for streaming stuff in HD, the laptop is relatively cool.

I have read some online comments about an issue of "ghosting", whereby images appear to "burn" on to the screen. I have not noticed this, and suspect that it was due to a faulty batch (but thought it should be mentioned for the sake of balance). One final thing of note, the laptop is currently shipping with Lion as the OS, but in the future it will come with Mountain Lion (the latest version).

***UPDATE 27/7/12*** I installed Mountain Lion earlier which was completely painless as you would hope. The process was rather quick as well - it took about 15 minutes to complete the installation and I was pretty impressed. I won't go into detail on all the updated features of ML. It is essentially a revamped version of Lion (which I always thought was a tad clunky) and makes the Retina Display run even smoother than before. One of the best new features in my opinion is the addition of AirPlay, although will only be relevant for those of you who have an Apple TV. Essentially, you can now mirror your laptop display to any TV with an New Apple TV (Latest Model - Launched Mar 2012) box connected. This is particularly good for streaming videos, and saves the need to get cables out to physically connect the laptop to the TV. One of the major gripes that has not been fixed... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine computer. Marketing guff, 12 Oct 2012
This review is from: Apple 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display (Intel Quad Core i7 2.3GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB Flash Memory, HD Graphics 4000, 1GB GeForce GT 650M, OS X Lion) (Personal Computers)
I bought one of these a few months ago, after sadly selling my beloved 11" MacBook Air (see first link in the comment below) when I had to give up my 24" Monitor.
(so I needed the new Pro for its bigger display....no other reason).

I chose this one over a conventional Pro because it is thinner and lighter. I've owned three Pros in recent years, and they were too heavy to carry around frequently.

So my thoughts about the new Pro:
In terms of processing grunt, it is comparable to my previous quad-core MacBook Pro (see second link in the comment below). Fine.
In day-to-day terms it is as fast as, but not noticeably faster than, my MacBook Air was.

The big display is crisp and good enough to negate a large monitor. Does the 'Retina Display' quality of it make things any better? No. For sure, the higher resolution of the display makes management of the screen area easier when editing videos and photos, but the higher pixels-per-inch makes no difference to the quality of the end result. I can easily work instead on my partner's 11" 2010 MacBook Air (see third link in the comment below) without fretting at all about the quality of the text or images....

It is a bit quieter than the previous MacBook Pro in normal to moderate operation, but at full chat the fan gets pretty busy. Battery life is about the same.

So, to summarise:
Is this the finest Mac Apple have ever made, as they claim? Perhaps it is in terms of internal engineering but frankly I think the 11" MacBook Air is still by far the most enjoyable Mac to use and offers more bang for the buck.
The so-called 'Retina Display' is a higher-resolution screen than on the previous MacBook Pro. That is all. It does not revolutionise your experience of using a laptop.

My advice: buy one if (like me) you need a powerful Mac in the lightest form with a good-sized display. Just don't buy one based on Apple's marketing hype alone.

Nice display, good build quality as usual (I still have a 5 year old MacBook that I use, but since I spend most of my time on the road its nice to have something with a bit more processing power). Retina screen looks great, at full res can be a little hard on the eyes as the text can get pretty small. Had no real problems after a month of use.

My only gripe is the lack of external connections. Two USBs is pretty limited, particularly because it has no built in DVD and it is likely if you use any kind of CD or DVD you'll end up with one of these, and with the limited internal memory you're going to use an external drive. I also have a USB external wireless broadband dongle so already I'm having to pack a USB hub! You have two Thunderbolt connections which sounds fabulous, but realistically what is available is overpriced, cheapest external disc you can get is nearly
