A bit fiddly to install memory but lots of helpful videos on Utube.Don't waste money upgrading from Win7 Starter. It is compact and fast and does everything that you need. Win7 Home just gives cosmetic upgrades and junk like Games. I thought Android might be useful, but, I agree with other reviewers, it is a waste of time. I might try to install Ubuntu at some time. Good netbook for travelling, as it runs all your normal programs just like a desktop. Plenty of space on hard drive to partition it and run a Truecrypt volume so that you can take as much confidential data as you like without worrying about it getting stolen. I have made video calls over Skype and it does well. Easy to carry and the charger is quite small, not a big brick like some others. Only niggle so far is with the touch pad, which is too sensitive causing repeated typing errors as your hand floats over it.Having used this netbook for a week now, here is a quick report on what I've done with it: - I installed the 2Gig DDR3 RAM upgrade immediately. This is an awkward procedure even if there are some useful Youtube videos to assist you. Suggest you only attempt this if you are comfortable dismantling fiddly electronic components. Prising the keyboard off your brand new purchase is a little unnerving... - I ditched the pre-installed copy of Windows (as it seemed slow) and replaced it with clean build of Windows7 Ultimate (x86). Performance was noticeably improved. Windows found most drivers during install (if connected to the internet). The original set is in a hidden directory on the C: Drive called OEM. You can force these to install afterwards. You need to install the Acer Launch app to use the keyboard driven options (like WiFi on/off). Drivers can also be found on the Acer website. - Partitioned the drive with a 100G D: drive and encrypted it with bitlocker. No notable performance impact when using the D: drive. - Installed Office 2010, itunes, MS Forefront, Norton Ghost. All run fine. OS installation is quite slow, especially installing all the windoze updates, but once everything is up and running the netbook is quite quick. Outlook, powerpoint, word , excel etc all run smoothly. Windows is happy with Aero switched on although I disabled windows file indexing and search services which may be helping. CPU usage floats around 30% on average. Windows Experience rates the machine at 3.0, the weakest factor being Calc per Sec @ 3.1. Disk performance is surprisingly good (score of 5.9). HD Tune reported an average of >50Mbps from the HDD which is fine. This netbook is never going to play games. Minecraft is unplayable, even in 'fast' mode. Video is ok - Youtube and BBC iplayer are smooth, even at full screen. It managed to play a 720p MKV video (just). 1080p is not really an option. WiFi is good - Speedtest.net clocked over 10Mbps over WiFi at home. External connectivity works well also. The integrated VGA and USB connectors mean I can plug the netbook into a monitor, mouse, keyboard at work. The monitor auto switches to high resolution. The netbook feels reasonably robust. I don't really like the gloss finish and expect this will start to look beaten up within a few months. The display is ok - not the best I've seen but good for the price. Reflection is low and it seems fine in daylight. The power socket feels flimsy. This may be the first part to break. The underside can get a little warm (my legs are hot now) and fan noise is audible, but not noticeable at all. Sound levels from the netbook are quite low. Don't plan to listen to any music via the internal speaker. Battery life seems to be around 4.5 hours with typical use. I suspect this may extend with offline only use. Overall I'm happy with the purchase. I've had a few admiring looks on the train and at work. For the price, my expectations have been met (so far). |
