4.0 out of 5 stars Nikon or a Nik-con?, 5 Feb 2011
This review is from: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens (Electronics)
An important lesson in photography is that it doesn't matter how expensive your digital camera is, the pictures you take will only be as good as the quality of your lens. In fact, I would rather own a cheap camera / decent lens combo, than own a top-of-the-range camera and a cheap lens. One of my favourite reasonably priced lenses at the moment is Nikon's 18-105mm VR, a versatile and lightweight model which outperforms its economy price-tag. The lens is compatible with all of Nikon's current crop of digital SLR models, and many of their older shooters. The lens features a zoom range of 18-105mm (equivalent to around 7x), which makes it extremely versatile - it allows me to take wide-angle shots, and also get fairly close to my subjects when needs be. As a result, the lens represents a decent option for nature photographers, suitable for both landscape and animal spotting.

The 'VR' part of the lens's title stands for Vibration Reduction - a feature activated by flipping a small switch on the side of the body. In general, Nikon's vibration reduction is superb, and in practice you can get away with using a slower shutter speed that you normally would at full zoom. A switch above the Vibration Reduction allows you to choose between Auto and Manual focus modes - and here's one of the main issues I have with the lens - the manual focus ring feels flimsy, plasticky, and generally cheap. That said, let's not forget this is a budget model, and apart from this particular issue, the lens is rather good. It features Nikon's top quality ED glass, designed specifically to increase sharpness and minimize any chromatic aberrations.

The lens is comfortable to hold (and pretty light), with the zoom ring coated in a large rubberized grip. The zoom is spaced out nicely, and a decent turn is required in order to navigate through the entire range. This makes accurate zooming really easy, and thankfully, there isn't any 'lens-creep' (when the lens moves by itself via the power of gravity as you angle it vertically), which is something I find to be particularly annoying. Although it features a plastic lens mount, the build quality (apart from the focus ring as mentioned earlier) feels well made, and is arguably of a better quality that Nikon's other budget zoom, the 55-200 VR.

The aperture range (amount of light that enters the lens) starts out at f/3.5, and reaches f/5.6 by the time you get to around 85mm - for this reason the lens isn't especially good for low light photography (check out Nikon's cheap 50mm f/2 if you want an excellent and pin sharp low-light shooter) although the autofocus speed is pretty snappy in dim conditions. All the focusing is done inside the lens, meaning that the actual lens barrel doesn't ever rotate, which is good for those who like to use polarizing filters. Speaking of filters, if you're intending to use one with the lens, you'll need it to be of the 67mm variety. I generally leave a UV or skylight filter on all my lenses, so the glass at the front is protected at a times.

The closest focusing distance is around one and a half foot, meaning it really isn't best suited as a macro lens. That said, it can produce good results from this distance at full zoom - I've shot a few insects in this manner to decent effect. Finally let's look at the image quality - surely it can't be any good for such a reasonable price? Well actually, I have found the 18-105 to produce sharp results throughout the entire zoom range. That said, there is a little softness at the extremities - but nothing out of the ordinary for a budget model. Similarly, there is a bit of vignetting at full zoom (darkness in the corners of the image), although again, it's not something that I am particularly concerned about.

Overall then, Nikon's 18-105 VR is a really good lens, which I would wholeheartedly recommend if the finances dictate that you can't purchase a more expensive model. Personally, I would love to own Nikon's 18-200mm VR for the increased versatility, but it costs a hell of a lot more, and the image quality isn't any better. Although this particular model may sound fairly expensive, in the world of Nikon lenses, this is the equivalent of pennies - a real bargain at the price and a decent buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value telephoto, 26 Dec 2010
This review is from: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens (Electronics)
I bought this lens for my D3100. The standard kit lens had just to short a range - I reckoned I would be constantly swapping between a short and a long telephotos.

This is a fine lens - I'm happy for it to be the only lens for my Nikon and it hasn't let me down. The pictures it takes are crisp and very clear. I'm not sure if I have seen any benfit of the VR functionality.

The only thing that lets this lens down slightly is the size - this is quite a big heavy lens - it dwarfs the D3100 body. Other than the size I would give it five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars user experience Nikon AF-S DX 18-105G VR, 15 July 2010
This review is from: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens (Electronics)
Lens to me is ideal. Not too bulky ( little more than 18-55)with an adequate zoom range for all normal photography;the VR is useful on the longer zoom settings ( & from moving coach!). So my recent holiday to Lake Garda & Dolomites produced a highly satisfactory set of photographs. The urgent despatch from Amazon worked well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great considering the price!, 7 Oct 2012
This review is from: Asus UX32A Zenbook 13.3-inch Laptop (Silver) - (Intel Core i5 3317 2.6GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, WLAN, Webcam, BT, Integrated Graphics, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit) (Personal Computers)
I was eyeing up the UX31A but deemed it too expensive and with image and text size issues due to the high (but not quite high enough!) resolution screen, I chose the cheaper option, the UX32A. The build quality is identical and feels very premium! There is no flex of any note in the casing, and it looks very aesthetically pleasing as any good Mac-clone should! The backlit keys are nice.

This laptop is a dream to use! It feels like a Macbook Air but with Windows instead of IOS! Just what I was looking for. The battery life, screen contrast and brightness are fantastic! The keyboard is very pleasurable to type on, with good size keys, good travel and nice surfaces and sound. The touchpad is excellently sized with a nice smooth surface and lovely drivers to produce mac-like smooth two-finger scrolling, two-finger tapping for right click etc. More control over the touchpad functions would be nice, however. Maybe future drivers will provide! The instant-on feature is nice to have but as the small SSD is only used for caching, is not quite as quick as advertised, but is quick nonetheless. The speakers give great boom for their buck considering the size of the laptop, perfect for watching movies or television from under 10 feet away.

The lack of SSD-only storage does irk at times when the constant albeit quiet clicking of the computer caching the HDD data onto the SSD makes noise during quiet times. This, however, is not a problem considering the lack of SSD is reflected in the price. Otherwise the bloatware is a minor inconvenience, but can be sorted with effort. Rather annoying is now when the non-Asus sleep mode is used, the touchpad's extra functions such as two-finger scrolling and three-finger swipes are not always reactivated on wake-up. The lack of a palm-check for the touchpad is definitely a problem that many will suffer from but I have been able to avoid it thus far, so it does not worry me to any great extent.

All in all a decent buy. To improve I would add an SSD, add a retina-screen and improve some of the above problems, but then it is the UX31A and

4.0 out of 5 stars First Mac... but will not be my last!!, 2 Nov 2011
By
I am not going to go into any technical details as there are a whole host of reviews that can be uncovered by a simple google search, instead I want to concentrate more on the "feel" of the Air

First impressions are... wow. I had tested one in the Apple store several times, but it is hard to appreciate its size and portability until you own one. I seem to find myself randomly picking it u just to spin it round and marvel at it's size and weight. If any thing it is a little too portable, I took it out for the first time on Thursday, and couldn't even tell it was in my bag. So much so that my paranoia of protecting my shiny new toy kicked in and I found myself opening my bag every five minutes to check I had not been pick pocketed. Hopefully this paranoia will wear off after a few weeks.

Aa a previous Windows fan and Windows 7 user I was a little sceptical about swithching to a mac and not too sure how hard it would be to adapt to using a new operating system. A few days of messing around have proved my fears were unjustified and I have actually enjoyed and still am enjoying the learning curve, infact after only two days of using my Macbook Air I logged back onto my Windows PC and found that I kept trying to use multi-touch which is a part of the new Lion OS.

The model I purchased was the upgraded 1.8Ghz i7 with a 128Gb Hard drive and 4Gb Ram, and compared to my 2 year old 2.13 Ghz dual core Windows laptop this feels a lot faster and more polished. The size of the hard drive was a concern coming from a larger 3.5 inch SATA styl hard drive, however this is easily remedied by keeping most of my videos and music on a small and inexpensive (
