To test the temperature and reliability I ran the drive as the primary drive for an i7 Quad Core laptop with 8GB Ram, transferring a few hundred GB's over approximately 2 hours and running a few applications. I was extremely impressed that, in terms of performance, it kept up with my usual 7200rpm drive even at 5400rpm. At no point could the temperature of the device be considered above "warm" and you can safely operate this drive without taking it out of it's leather casing (!).
If you need a drive for running DVD quality videos through USB 3.0, backing up your computer or simply a bottomless pit for your documents, I highly recommend this Hard drive. A few compatibility issues and faux pas from Toshiba keep me from giving a fantastic product 5 stars but it can relax in the knowledge that the inevitable 4 stars is an understatement of its ability once you're up and running.
Overall I'm happy with my purchase and can recommend it
